Kabul attack overshadows Biden visit with new Israeli leader

President Biden on Friday defended the evacuation of Americans and Afghan allies from Kabul’s airport as a “dangerous” yet “worthy” mission after the operation was bloodied by a terrorist attack the day before.

More than 12,000 people were flown out in the last 24 hours, he said. That’s a slower pace than before the attack, which the Pentagon said involved one bomb and gunmen at an airport gate. The Pentagon said its earlier report of a second bomb at a nearby hotel was not correct.

Biden’s comments came at the beginning of his Oval Office meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who recently replaced Benjamin Netanyahu.

The meeting was delayed a day because of the terrorist attack on the U.S. evacuation effort in Kabul, which killed dozens of Afghan civilians and 13 American service members. A local affiliate of the Islamic State has claimed responsibility.
